Under Cover of Darkness

Posted by: vlad_dracul

Dracula had been hunting, when it happened. Without any warning, he found himself standing in a tremendous library. The place was apparently well-funded. The place was clean and busy, with well-stocked shelves. The walls and carpets were just ornate enough to beautiful and showed no signs of wear or neglect. Dracula turned slowly, studying the people.

They were amazingly varied.

Some of the people were easily recognizable. There were a fair number of ordinary humans. There were even some, like him, who were considered myth, creatures who either were born of or who used magic. There were some he did not recognize at all, strange beings straight out of imagination. Dracula walked around slowly, pretending to browse, but truthfully examining his surroundings more closely.

He noticed that no one paid him much attention and no one seemed concerned. There was no signs of anyone expecting violence, yet someone must have brought him here, surely? He stopped, going very still, when he saw one of the library's occupants open a book...and disappear inside!

"What is this place?"

comments

She lost consciousness shortly after finding a reading desk somewhere among the labyrinthine bookshelves and hiding herself beneath it.

For now, she sleeps, curled under the desk and recovering from her most recent fit.

comments

She hadn't intended to get an unexpected transferrence.

When: Now.

The abrupt and drastic change of surroundings sent a rush of adrenaline to course through Shelke's Mako-empowered veins. There was just no way to calculate and estimate the timing and means of sudden transferrances between worlds. The Nexus had tendencies to do such things all the time.

Shelke may have become familiar with this trait to its behavior, but she most certainly wasn't used to it. Her lithe body bristled as she braced herself for any oncoming danger. Her dual EM sabers were still hooked onto the back of her shorts, to which was reassuring. She had seldomly left them behind, now that the Nexus had become more dangerous; infested with violent nanotech armored cyborgs...

Within miliseconds while treading quietly, she realized this was a library--and a collossal one at that. Never in her life had she seen so many books. But why? Why am I here, she had to ask herself as her hands hovered close to the handles of her weapons. Am I still in the Nexus? From there, a group of logic-based thought proccesses crowded within her complicated mind that was both computerized and human.

If it changed itself again, why would it decide on a library? Why a library at all? It does not make any sense.

Why would a library appear on the island? The sentience of it does commonly causes situations that bends reality without any means of reasoning and explanations present. However...

If I'm in the same world, then where are my friends? Where are the drones? Why did I come here alone? Are they present, or did they vanish? That last question Shelke had was not something she wanted to think about at all as a quick thought appeared to counter it. No. Negative; it wouldn't make everyone disappear. It cannot fight its own battles. It cannot make Xargin or the drones disappear either.

She randomly glanced at the titles of the books on the shelves; A Tale of Two Cities, Bleak House, The Jungle Book, Gulliver's Travels, Little Women, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Black Beauty...

Some of these Shelke had recalled from the expansive mound of collective data stored in her mental RAM. Classic Literature. If there's a reason for this choice of placement... If there's any significance to my being here at this place at all, it is a possible variable that it knows I like to obtain and learn new data. But this is far too much data to acquire in one day.

There had to be a reason or purpose to being here. She had a hunch as she moved out of one of the aisles... Around the corner, she saw a box of dark boxed objects that didn't look at all like books. Shelke walked over to it without any hesistation or thought, convinced that there may be something more, and a clue. Crouching, picking one of the objects up, she found out it was a sort of computer after finding a seam that led to opening it up. Computers and other technology interested her a little more than books. It was a computer on a wrist band. There was a monitor and keypad with six buttons on it.

This could be useful. Shelke adjusted the band to the device to have it fit on her wrist and not come loose, and then began to look through the box to see that there had to be at least twenty of these minature computers in there. They looked all the same, so Shelke chose to figure out how at least one worked. In pressing the upper left on the minature keypad, the monitor screen lit up and displayed a list of names, arranged in alphabetical order by last name. Kruger, Freddy. Laufeyson, Loki... There were three names vertically listed, and Rui, Shelke was at the bottom.

A directory of those in this Library, perhaps, she assumed and moved on, pressing a another button on her wrist computer. She didn't wonder about her own name about this list, but she knew she had to be aware of the other two, wherever they were.

comments

Though he was fairly certain he hadn't died...and certainly not in battle. At least not yet and not this time. He hummed softly, fingers gently stroking over the spines of several books as he walked. A number were familiar, others less so and intriguing but now was not the time to pick up a book and lose himself in words. Taking a moment to shift forms he called out in a bell clear voice that belonged only to his female voice. "Hello? Is there anyone around?"

comments
